The 2007
Rosemount Irish Baseball Season was dedicated to former Head Coach Craig
Kusick. The Irish would go on to finish runner-up in Section 1AAA that
season. Although it wasn’t a State Championship season, it will go down
in Irish Baseball history as one of the best season’s to be remembered
for Irish Baseball! The Irish finished with an 8-10 record in the TOUGH
Lake Conference. The Irish would battle back to come within 1 game of
making the state tournament (Craig Kusick style)! The Irish finished
runner-up to Hastings in Section 1AAA in 2007.
Coach Kusick
died on September 27, 2006 after a long and courageous battle with
leukemia.
Coach Kusick
arrived at Rosemount High School in 1982. He taught Physical Education
and Health and coached Football, Boys’ Basketball and Girls’ Basketball
in addition to serving as an Assistant Baseball Coach for 8 years before
being named Head Coach in 1991.
During his 14
years as Head Coach of the Irish, Coach Kusick compiled a record
262-154, 42nd all time among Minnesota High School Baseball
Coaches.
Coach Kusick
led the Irish to three Lake Conference Championships and seven Section
Championships, including an impressive run of six consecutive.
He was also
named Section 1AAA Coach of the Year six times.
Coach Kusick
stepped down as Head Coach and teacher prior to the 2004-2005 school
year, but never ruled out a return to coaching.
A former
member of the Minnesota Twins, Kusick’s legacy will never be forgotten
in the Irish Baseball Program.
Trevor Monroe
was hired in 2005 as an assistant coach by Coach Kusick in 2005 along
with Ricky Saintey.
The 2007
Irish Baseball players wore “44” on their game hats as well as a “CK”
decal on their batting helmets and will continue to do so under Monroe’s
leadership!
Kusick was
preceded in death by his wife Sara Beth just nine months before his own
death.
They are
survived by their son Craig, Jr. and daughter Katie and three
grandchildren.
